I have no idea whether the tree still exists or not. I can no longer obtain any kinds of cuttings or seeds, I'm sorry. The Duke has been number 1 on my wish list since the very beginning of this endeavor. I have some new root stock sprouts that I would love to scion if you have any any extra budwood available. I would be excited for Duke seeds too. Please let me know if that is an option. Thanks! When my brother-in-law surprisingly passed away at age 42, it really kind of sent us into a funk for awhile. At any rate -- yes -- the Duke experiment has gone better than I ever could have dreamed. Our baby Duke was a foot tall when I planted it. Less than three years later it has grown to an impressive height of 20 feet. Avocado trees normally take 4-5 years before they produce. The Duke produced a crop of six avocados in less than two years. This year it's really poised to take off as I can see the flower buds forming outside my dining room window where the tree is planted. As far as acquiring a Duke? Same challenge as it was five years ago when I started this quest for an avocado tree that can not only survive freezing weather, it prefers it. Nobody outside of hobbyists like me propagates this variety. My tree required the services of someone who really knew this grafting craft better than I did, plus avocado root stock. Solve those problems, Thomas, and I'd be happy to provide you with scion material as I will have to seriously trim the tree back this spring because it's blocking a walkway.Bill Birdhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11816389236294882066noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1040094306206601621.post-16542928432622770122016-01-30T08:30:09.616-08:002016-01-30T08:30:09.616-08:00Just read this post that is a few years old. I have 3 avocado trees growing well in Granite Bay CA...bacon, Mexicola and Grand Mexicola. Would love to add the rare Duke to that list. I also have a rare apple Tree from Tom Brown's North Carolina Apple Hunter called the Junalaska after the Great Cherokee chief from the 1850's discovered about 5 years back and a few others of his. I have lived on my property 25 years and aint going no where so I am willing to wait a year or two to get a Duke. I can understand the excitement behind this apple. It's darn good -- unlike any other apple I've ever had. It's not supposed to grow well in this zone -- Zone 9A -- but it seems to like the spot where I've placed it in the Bird Back 40 so I'm not complaining. The only drawback with this variety is that it grows slower than the other two varieties planted with it. But, no matter -- I'll just give the other two varieties a heavier haircut this fall after harvest season so the Honeycrisp has room to run and grow. As far as the Duke Avocado is concern, yes trees will be available next summer. Just email me or leave behind and email address...Bill Birdhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11816389236294882066noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1040094306206601621.post-86150658885095452802013-09-21T14:21:05.333-07:002013-09-21T14:21:05.333-07:00Love following your saga regarding the Duke avocad...Love following your saga regarding the Duke avocado. I've been following your blog for a while now. BTW how's that Honeycrisp doing? My one year old bare root bit the dust. I think I'll try again this winter. I am getting ready to plant a Mexicola here in Granite Bay to see how it will do. Hopefully I wont be sending it to an early doom. A Duke would make a good companion!<br />WardPyrodudehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09348660807754810499noreply@blogger.com
